The 37ᵗʰ International Geological Congress (IGC 2024) will be held at Busan’s BEXCO on August 25. Rallying geologists and earth scientists from around the world, IGC 2024 also known as the Olympics of geology, presents an opportunity to explore both the Earth’s secrets and space geology.
With the slogan “The Great Travelers: Voyages to the Unifying Earth,” IGC 2024 is the first International Geological Congress to be held in person in 8 years due to the pandemic in the intervening years. Expected to assemble more than 7,000 participants from 121 countries from varying fields of geology, IGC 2024 is set to be the biggest IGC conference yet.
At IGC 2024, a wide range of geology research and knowledge will be shared. Each day, there will be presentations by scholars who have received the prestigious Émile Argand Medal from the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
At IGC 2024, a wide range of geology research and knowledge will be shared. Each day, there will be presentations by scholars who have received the prestigious Émile Argand Medal from the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
Key topics at the event will include how Earth's geology has changed over billions of years, the impact of environmental pollution and climate change on geology and our neighboring planets.
IGC 2024 will be accompanied by geological exploration programs in Korea and other parts of Asia, a geo-expo on major issues of geological concern, and a festival of geologically-themed films. An event intended for both experts and non-experts alike, IGC 2024 has much inspiration to impart to today’s youth.

IGC 2024 will demonstrate the attitudes and insights with which the geological community will approach the environment and climate change in the coming years. The continuing pollution of the Earth is changing the environment, with climate change being a major aspect of such change. At IGC 2024, the enlarged roles and responsibilities of geology in carbon neutrality, the safety of nuclear power generation and the disposal of radioactive waste, and climate change response will be highlighted and then affirmed in the closing ceremony with the Busan Declaration. Made under the auspices of the International Union of Geological Sciences, the Busan Declaration is a pact binding the scientific community in cooperation to respond environmental changes and future crises. There are great expectations within the geological community of such environmental endeavors.
To set an example to be followed by future IGC events, IGC 2024 will be a sustainable and environmentally responsible event. This is particularly important given that the MICE industry is one of the many causes of environmental degradation.
The air and ground travel that occurs in the attendance of MICE events around the world contributes to emissions, while the wastes generated at MICE events, including food waste and non-recyclables, are another major pollution factor. Further additions to emissions are made when electricity, gas, and water are used at MICE events, and MICE event visitors contribute to pollution with the waste and wastewater they leave behind in the MICE cities where they stay.
Achievements in Environmentalism by Global MICE Destinations

There are many MICE cities around the world that understand the need to take an active role in sustainability.
The music festival Øyafestivalen, held in Oslo, Norway, focuses on environmentalism as its main goal.
The festival organizers are working hard to make it the greenest festival in the world. Their efforts have been recognized by the international nonprofit A Greener Festival (AGF), which awarded them the International Greener Festival Award. They have also received several other awards for their achievements in waste reduction and resource recycling.
Norway’s efforts to promote environmentalism through MICE events can be divided into four major categories.
Organic food | Energy | Transport | Waste |
Use of local produce in the distribution of organic food | Switch to renewable energy through partnerships with local energy companies | Use of green driving routes, provision of bicycle parking facilities | Use of biodegradable food packaging and reusable cups |
The US is also on board with MICE event sustainability. A notable example was set by Oracle OpenWorld 2019, an annual showcase of Oracle products. This conference made sustainability efforts in three categories and achieved impressive results.
Energy | Recycling and Reuse | Waste |
Total emissions reduced by 50% from 2012 | Reuse of 95% of used carpets Use of upcycled products, including fabric banners and signage |
Composting of all food waste in line with local standards |
Canada is another country home to a MICE event celebrated for its sustainability. BUILDEX is an annual building expo that sees the participation of many members of the building industry, including suppliers of building, flooring, and roofing materials.
Leftover materials from the event, such as timber, flooring, lighting, and furniture, are donated to Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. They are used to build homes for low-income families, offering them at affordable prices. The goal is to improve housing conditions and help vulnerable people gain independence.
Norway, the US, and Canada are exemplary countries that are committed to reducing waste and helping the underprivileged. But what about Busan? How is Busan working towards sustainability through its MICE events?

The BTO CVB maintains a range of local partnerships that have been instrumental in its efforts to shape Busan into a sustainable MICE city. In line with agreements made with MICE businesses, government offices, and other companies, the BTO CVB conducts environmental campaigns that include activities such as the manufacturing of upcycled goods for MICE events. Sustainability figures prominently in the large international events the BTO CVB has a hand in organizing. The 45ᵗʰ Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR 2024), held from July 13 to 21, included a green MICE and tourism promotions booth made of recyclable timber, to be reused at the upcoming IGC 2024.
The IGC 2024 Organizing Committee has vowed to make IGC 2024 an eco-friendly event, in the hope of inspiring positive change within the IGC community. IGC 2024 is to be a paperless conference, with all handouts and records made electronically. Local suppliers to IGC 2024 were chosen based in part on their minimization of plastic disposables, and recycling stations will be placed throughout the venue to encourage participants to voluntarily dispose of their waste sensibly. Initiatives for carbon offsets and other environmental impact reductions will be observed on field trips and other auxiliary events.
To Shape Busan Into Asia’s Finest MICE City
The Sustainability of MICE has become a prerequisite for the success of MICE cities. It certainly makes sense, as the progress of humanity discussed at many MICE events would only be possible with a healthy planet. Watch this space to learn about Busan’s coming efforts to support sustainability through MICE!
